John Baldessari's BMW Art Car
Last night saw the launch of the 19th vehicle from the BMW Art Car Collection, this time designed by the American conceptual artist, John Baldessari. As one of the most important contemporary artists working today, Baldessari joins an incredible group from Calder and Hockney to Warhol and Koons that has contributed to the collection over the past forty years. He has used his signature aesthetic combining colour, shapes and text to create a visually stunning work which will stand out at both the museum and on the race track in Daytona early next year.
Designing the car, the artist turned to well-known stylistic devices and created an iconic work which unites his creative practices of the past fifty years. As a committed minimalist, he worked with the colours red, yellow, blue and green and with his monochrome dots, he left his familiar colourful marks on the M6 GTLM. Baldessari’s Art Car will be on public display at Art Basel in Miami before heading to prove itself on the track at the Rolex 24 hour race at Daytona on January 28 and 29.
