1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Trans Am
Born as one of three Boss 302s built by Kar Kraft and prepared by Shelby for the 1969 Trans-Am season, this car was the second of three such examples constructed. All three cars were numbered sequentially, with '627' being the first, '628' (this car) as the second, and '629' being the third and last.
For this particular Boss 302, Peter Revson and Horst Kwech were its drivers for the season, and Revson was the first behind the wheel at the car’s inaugural outing at Michigan in May of 1969. Kwech had bad luck with his first outing behind the wheel at Lime Rock that same month, and the car was forced to retire with mechanical problems. Revson was in the driver’s seat for Mid-Ohio in June, finishing 4th overall. Following a DNF at Donnybrooke, the car raced at Bryar Park, where Revson finished 3rd. At Laguna Seca, Dan Gurney took Kwech’s position and piloted 628 to a 3rd place finish. Gurney returned to the driver’s seat at Kent and finished 10th overall. For the last two races of the season, Revson would pilot 628 at Sears Point and managed a 3rd place finish at Riverside. It is important to note that during this time, 627 and 629 were written off, and 628 became the only surviving team Shelby Boss 302 at the end of the season, emerging remarkably unscathed. Today, this is the only surviving example of its kind.
