BMW's game-changing troublemaker

The 2002 Turbo was launched at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show. At it’s launch not everyone gave it a warm reception. Its bolt-on wings, bumper-less front spoiler and iconic BMW Motorsport colours were considered uncouth, some elements of the German press going as far as to accuse it of ‘provoking aggressiveness’. And to top that off, ‘2002’ and ‘Turbo’ appeared backwards on the front spoilers to warn unsuspecting cars just exactly what was approaching in the rear-view mirror. This was BMW's first turbocharged production car, which produced 170 hp. However due to the 1973 oil crisis, only 1,672 were built.
